Seesmic: Junk Drawer or Drunk Drawer?
Written By: christine

Finally got my webcam from my parents' while in LA this weekend so stay tuned for my obligatory "first Seesmic video" where I'll probably spend most the time telling the camera that it's my first Seesmic video while glancing over at the screen to see if my hair looks ok or if the camera is catching my "fat" angle. LOL. Before diving into the world of Seesmic, I've been having fun checking out what's been done so far.

I really like how they pick a topic and compile it into an entertaining few minutes of Seesmic replies. Here's one that was fun to watch where people are showing us what's in their junk drawers...or is it drunk drawers? Hard to say! Literally.

For my friends in China who haven't heard of Seesmic yet, you can hop over and read the TechCrunch article here.

You can also catch people on Twitter and join the nightly conversation as there's a group of Seesmicers on there including founder Loic Le Meur who was kind enough to give me some invite codes to pass out to my China biz friends to test out.

Sorry, Not Feeling The Utterz

Ok, another new media app to add to my very cluttered mental junk drawer of signed up, tried it, didn't work for me stuff. First heard about Utterz a few days ago from following the conversations on Twitter (now THAT is a cool app. i'll tell you why later in another post) about a startup that was sort of like the audio version of Twitter.

The China Twitterati List

Add an active community of Twitterers from the China space right here.

Just follow ChinaList on Twitter. All those being followed by ChinaList are active China Twitterers. Follow them for China insight.

*If you have no idea what Twitter is here is a nice crash course.

If you are new to Twitter and in China, here's my 2 cents on why you should consider following non-China people.

...IMHO, the key to Twitter is following a good group of interesting people and joining in the conversation no matter where they are. It usually take a few days (for me, i think a few weeks) until the lightbulb goes on and you realize why it's so addicting for some. if you're new to Twitter, definitely check out alltop.com's cool Twitterati list and follow these people for maximum Twitter conversation overload from around the world. :D

...once you get into the swing of things, you can ditch your web version of Twitter for any one of the cool Twitter desktop clients out there. A favorite among many, and the one I use is Twhirl.

...if you have an iPhone and find yourself twittering on the go like me, then give this a try from your iPhone's web browser: iTweet

...and while we're at it, this cartoon is pretty darn funny.

Video Thumbnails Are Evil

...i was just checking out my FriendFeed and totally forgot that every Seesmic video I post is also being fed through now too. this whole videoblogging thing leaves me rather defeated and humbled when it comes to my vanity. it appears no matter how nice i try and make my hair and makeup look for the camera...you can't escape the inevitable ridiculous looking thumbnail picture that has a mind of its own. *sigh* oh well.

What Comes To Mind When You Think About China?

Ok, so it's been a few days since I sent out my bunch of invite codes to Seesmic and not a single person has gotten on yet to give it a try. Maybe because it's a bit hard to understand since it's still in its "pre-Alpha" testing stage. I've been on 3 days and while they are still in the process of building out more functionalities for it, it's very obvious that this is going to probably replace a lot of the ways we communicate once people get the hang of it and give it a try. KEY WORDS = Give It A Try.

So I came up with an idea and got the help of the community to show you all an example of what Seesmic is. (Founder Loic Le Meur actually asked this question yesterday and I look forward to the Seesmix they'll be making of it) ...but in the meantime, to me Seesmic's a platform for having conversations with people around the world -- either (almost) realtime or when convenient. A cross between Twitter and Youtube I've heard.

To show you guys how a typical conversation evolves I asked the community the following question:

...and within minutes I received some really interesting "right off the top of my head and into the Seesmic stream" replies. Here are some I'd like to share with you:

...there are so many great responses...look out for another round later on tonight...while you're at it, drop me a line if you're interested in joining the conversation.
